We hadn’t booked a table but walked into the Bistro early to see if we could get a table on this hot and sunny evening and received a warm, friendly welcome and told a table wouldn’t be a problem, so we chose to sit outside in the glorious sunshine.
An interesting array of dishes on the menu led us to share a starter of Seared Scallops, a favourite, on a Cauliflour puree with Rocket – when it arrived they had kindly split the dish for us by plating it in two plates so we didn’t need to fight over a plate in the middle, which was a nice touch. It was delicious, although I felt my scallops were slightly over cooked although seared nicely, they lacked that nice opaque middle I come to expect of perfectly cooked scallops. The Cauliflour puree was a nice compliment to the dish, not over powering but a distinctive texture and flavour to contrast with the scallops.
My main was the Lamb on Broad bean puree with Kumara and I couldn’t fault it, the lamb was cooked well with a light pinkness in the middle, the broad bean puree was delicious and a nice, strong contrast in flavour to the lamb. A choice of salad or seasonal veg was offered, so all in all a handsome portion of food – and so refreshing not to be charged extra for veggies! The Kiwi opted for the Duck and although it was a great dish he felt he could have done with some more Duck! He thought the fresh salad was lovely.
A great meal in a lovely location with good service and a good price point – we will be back!
