The Front Room, Waikanae Beach, Kapiti Coast

I love Waikanae Beach.  If we want to escape the city and go for a long walk along the beach, we will head up the Kapiti Coast and come to rest at Waikanae for a walk along it’s broad sands and even, on a hot day, enjoy a swim in the sea.

The added bonus of going to Waikanae Beach is that it is well serviced by nice cafes!  The Front Room tends to be our favoured spot due to their using Coffee Supreme beans, which is also a favourite.

We had lunch there, sitting out in the lovely garden at the back of the cafe, with a friend and the Kiwi and I both opted for the Asian style Pork Belly with bok choi and rice.  The delicate portion contained beautifully tender pork with a caramelised skin which was pleasantly chewy but I think I would have preferred to be more like crackling.  At $18 it was a pleasant lunch which satisfied although I think a coconut rice may have made it a little more interesting.  Our friend had the cooked breakfast which was a handsome plate of breakfast favourites which also went down a treat.

We then had a Supreme Coffee flat white – a perfect end to lunch!
