The Larder, Miramar, Wellington

Many a favourable word has been written about The Larder and since we were meeting a friend from the Airport this convinced us to give it a try while over at that side of the City.  Our first time there it was too busy and we didn’t have time to stand around for 20 mins waiting for a table (they don’t take lunch bookings), this second visit we just managed to score a table in the bustling cafe which seemed to have every table full.

After a substantial wait, despite the cafe clearing of customers somewhat just after we sat down, we finally had our order taken by the rather sour waitress.  So much for The Larder’s claim that they “aim to provide a warm and friendly service”, felt more like a strong Southerly, as if we were an inconvenience!

A further considerable wait for our food finally paid off.  I tried the Corn Fritters with Avocado, Crispy Bacon and Red Pepper Relish ($14) and it all tasted lovely, great to finally get some crispy bacon in NZ!  The corn fritters were tasty and all the textures and flavours worked well.  The Kiwi had the Pappardelle with Lamb Meatballs and found the pasta was overcooked, we like it ‘al dente’,  and although it was fine food he felt it was nothing to get enthusiastic about. Our friend enjoyed her food too, we agreed that for the price point the quality of the food was good but there was an overriding sense is that it wasn’t hitting the mark of expectation from the reviews it received.

A long wait for our after meal coffees added to our growing dissatisfaction – we were about to cancel the order when the coffees arrived.

We wanted to like it, but we are not convinced that they liked us! Maybe The Larder is overwhelmed by the publicity it has had lately, but based on my experience I won’t be going out of my way to return any time soon.  There are so many friendly, well priced and great cafes to chose from in Wellington, why would I bother?!
