Herzog Winery – Lunch Review

Al fresco at Herzog

Al fresco at Herzog

During our day of wine tasting in Marlborough, we stopped at Herzog Winery to lunch.  Three years ago we had a lovely wine tasting at the boutique winery and heard tale of the lovely restaurant.  Alas we will have to wait to dine in the restaurant, but we decided to have lunch in the bistro to get a flavour of what could be in store in the reputable restaurant.

A pleasant day, we decided to enjoy an al fresco lunch in the pretty surrounds of the garden.  The mainly European staff were friendly and busy.  We ordered some bread and olive oil to snack on whilst we waited for our main meals, keen to taste the olive oil since our friend’s father grows the olives!  Alas, the bread and olive oil was forgotten and didn’t arrive on our table, but unfortunately did arrive on the bill at the end of our meal!!

My main of Black Tiger Prawn Kebab on a bed of creamy asparagus risotto was delicious, light and delicate flavours but only four prawns made the $26 course feel a little light on the prawn side!  The Kiwi and our Tres Belle friend enjoyed the Pork Belly although decided it wasn’t a very summery dish.

The bread and olive oil charge was swifty removed from our bill with apologies.  It seems that a group from a cruise were also dining at the same time and it appears there were complaints about the wait between courses for one table of diners.  Charming staff and beautiful surroundings hopefully meant their meal wasn’t too spoilt.

Hans Herzog and his wife are excellent hosts and are frequently seen chatting to guests and making them feel welcome, the Swiss heritage coming through in their language abilities to make Europeans feel at home.
