La Bastide de Messine was tricky to find, as the main roads had recently been changed and the map was out of date, but once found it was worth the hassle! We received a warm welcome from Nelly, the joint proprietor of La Bastide de Messine along with her husband, Bruno.
The rooms were pleasant, charming, comfortable and clean. The house has been a project for Nelly and Bruno, restoring the place back to a lovely homestead in the Provencal style.
We were staying there with my in-laws, and on our first night we were the only guests. Prior to our arrival I requested to have dinner at La Bastide. When we came down for pre-dinner drinks out on the patio (homemade by Bruno, and delicious), it became apparent that Nelly and Bruno were eating with us, and I have to say that I was a little nervous of this. But, they are such a charming and hospitable couple, the six of us had a great evening over a truly delicious and more than generous Provencal dinner cooked by Nelly. Bruno played down his English speaking skills, and he and Nelly were very encouraging of our abilities to speak French, with a little correction along the way!
Morning breakfast can be served outside on the patio, but as it was late summer we ate inside, enjoying the abundance of Nelly’s homemade jams and the like.
We had two comfortable and pleasant nights stay and would heartily recommend La Bastide de Messine as a lovely, welcome resting place.
