South Africa – Ginja, Cape Town

Our first night in Cape Town we had booked dinner at Ginja. When the taxi driver pulled up I initially thought it was a mistake. Seemed a bit off the beaten track, and I couldn’t see the entrance to the restaurant. There was an open doorway and a long, narrow passageway, and it turned out this was the entrance… started to get a little worried! At the end of the narrow passage we came to the open door and down a few steps into a funky, urban chic restaurant to a warm welcome from one of the staff, much to my delight.
The menu is extensive, but i started with flavours of scallop – i am a fan of scallops and this was the most fantastic starter I have eaten! There was 4 scallops done with – tabbouleh salsa, dried baby marrow chip – ash salted plum white gazpacho – roasted corn laksa paprika popcorn – asian glaze wasabi caviar.

Then I opted for ostrich, my first taste of ostrich and it was melt in the mouth heaven.  Tomato and tamarind glazed ostrich, with caramelized apple jus moroccan mint tabbouleh apricot achar baby corn, courgette peppers almond orange fritter.  YUM!
Desserts were also fabulous.
Staff were efficient, helpful (rather gorgeous, too!) and knew their food and menu very well.
Fabulous!
Only downside for the uninitiated is possibly the location, but once inside, you don’t really care! YUM!
