Hong Kong – Part II

More of what we did on our brief visit to Hong Kong –

Markets

Street markets

Street markets

There are plenty of markets to keep you occupied!  From the Temple Street night market which sells all sorts of stuff from digital watches to clothes to fake bags and sunnies, to food to Jade to Flowers to Birds and Goldfish… it’s all out there to explore and see the locals going about their local business.

Midlevels Escalator

Escalating

Escalating

Not often that an escalator features as a “thing to do”, but the Midlevels Escalator is a series of escalators which cut 800m up the hillside and capable of carrying 30,000 people on a one-way system which changes direction at different points in the day.  From bottom to top it takes about 20-25 mins and it is strange to be on an escalator going up a street!  The walking down the hill just highlights how far you have travelled!

Food

One of the first things people said to us to do when we got to Hong Kong was EAT!  Certainly, the Chinese love their food and there is no shortage of choice from street stalls to formal restaurants, and it seems they all add up to yummyness!

Two foodie highlights for us were the Lei Garden Restaurant in Mong Kok.  Surrounded by locals and no staff particularly fluent in English, it was a bit of a guessing game with a little help from a very scaled down translated menu.  A bit of confusion about the “Steamed Glutinous Rice with Pork and Mushroom in Lotus Leaf Wrapping” saw us with a dish for 4 people, but it was delicious!  Pan-fried bun with Pork Belly (referred to as “Delly” on the menu!), Chinese cabbage and Mushroom was a particular favourite, along with the Fried Dumpling with sticky rice and Pork.

Yummmmm!

Yummmmm!

Another foodie delight was Yung Kee Restaurant.  This is a massive restaurant, it can seat 1,000 over 4 floors – despite this, we had to queue for 10 minutes! A bit more expensive, the service is good and the menu vast and mostly translated into English to assist your choice…or make it more difficult, depending on your viewpoint.  We ate like Kings, all tasted fabulous although sometimes we were not sure what we were eating – but that’s part of the adventure!
