New Zealand Beaches

Nelson Night

Nelson Night

One thing New Zealand certainly is not short of is coastline and beaches.  With all that coastline comes a huge variety in beach choice, from soft, white sands, golden sands, black sands, stone,  pebble and rocky beaches and plenty of surf beaches – truly something for everyone.

The Kiwi hails from West Auckland and spent considerable parts of his youth on the West Coast beaches of Piha, Karekare and Bethells – all are stunning, Karekare (as seen in “The Piano”) quickly became a particular wild favorite of mine with its dark sands and wild surf crashing onto its shoreline.

Nelson has lovely white, sandy beaches and then further along the coast you find beautiful golden, verging on orange, beaches.  We have just returned from a family holiday in Bay of Plenty, Pukehina, where we rented a bach (Kiwi term for beach house, pronounced like batch) right on the white, sandy shores of a looooong stretch of surf beach.

Living in Wellington we have quite a few beaches to choose from, one our favorites is North of the city at Waikanae, overlooking Kapiti Island.  For a non-surfy like me, the water is great for swimming in, the sand lovely and soft and it is a huge expanse of beach that even on a “busy” day means you are not crowded. Great!
