Azafrán, Mendoza, Argentina – Lunch Review

Azafran

Azafran

On Sunday we intended to visit a winery for winetasting and lovely lunch, but a taxi strike put paid to our plans so we decided to have a lovely lunch in Mendoza and headed to Azafran, which had been recommended to us by Emma at La Escondida.

There are tables outside on the busy avenida, but the restaurant looked so lovely we decided to eat inside, and I think it was a great decision.  A bright room thanks to a skylights, it had a lovely feel to it.  The menu was interesting, not the usual Argentinian fare, and I ordered chicken with an almond and honey crust ($47), the Kiwi ordering skirt steak with caesar salad ($49).  There is no wine list at Azafrán, there is a wine cellar!  You visit the fabulous room with the sommelier and he gives some suggestions but also leaves you to have a look at what is on offer – brilliant!

The food did exactly what it said on the tin, it was tasty with interesting texture and great presentation.  My chicken was cooked just right, with a lovely, chewy almond and honey crust full of flavour accompanied by zucchini. The Kiwi’s steak was cooked to pink perfection. This was proving to be our tastiest meal in Argentina so far.  Service was efficient, attentive but not intrusive.  We happily whiled away a few hours and were glad that we didn’t go to the vineyard! We followed our lovely mains with the Tibia de Chocolate ($19)which was a molten chocolate cake with olive ice cream which made a fabulous finale to a fantastic meal.  Certainly a must for lunch or dinner when in Mendoza!
